Rabbits

Rabbits can make a wonderful pet; indeed they are the third most popular British pet. (There are approximately 2 million in the UK). We have seen a massive upsurge in their popularity in the last 10-15 years, and consequently we have learnt a lot about their specific needs and health problems.

If you are considering buying a rabbit (or are under pressure to do so from your family!), please bear in mind the following facts:

  • Rabbits live for approximately 8 years; they require a long term commitment.
  • Many rabbits are abandoned to the J.S.P.C.A. Please contact them first to see if they have a suitable one for you to rehome.
  • Rabbits can make great indoor pets, but they will require “litter training”, and you will need to protect electric cables and indoor plants from being nibbled.
  • Rabbits should be vaccinated regularly (twice a year), they should be neutered and they can become ill. You have to be prepared for veterinary costs that can be significant. Some of these costs can be offset by pet insurance.

Whether you are thinking of acquiring a pet rabbit, or already have one, please read through the sections listed; they cover the following key areas:
